Or at least it is in the world of German opera. Today's Metropolitan Opera broadcast was noted half-naked male model Ricardo Baldin's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. At the beginning of the broadcast, the host (Renee Fleming) told the audience that Wagner started working on the opera in the midst of writing the Ring Cycle, wanting to write a quick, light comedy. It took seven years, and is six hours long.

If you've ever been to an opera, you know that lovers go from first meeting to murder-suicide (and that's in the comedies) in about five minutes, so six hours is inexcusable. The music was, of course, wonderful, and the performances were fine, but for God's sake, Richard, learn to edit your damn work.
