I went ahead and bought the paperwhite, and it arrived this morning. I'm already enjoying it, and reading on the screen is a lot easier than I thought it would be (I've never been one of those English majors who says, "Call it something else, because without paper, it's not a book," but I do enjoy the old ink-and-paper).

Also, BP was right—Amazon's Kindle store has a ton of free stuff, almost all of which appears to be either classic texts that have gone into public domain or self-published erotica, which causes no small amount of confusion. I mean, between The Iliad and Shared By Two Lovers, how the heck am I supposed to know which is the one from the GRE reading list?
