io9 has a story about the Mercury MESSENGER spacecraft, which is currently exploring the lil'est planet. When NASA launched the thing, they had a cool idea that hadn't been done with prior satellites: get a look at what it's like to leave the Earth behind.

I'll admit that I get oddly emotional thinking about satellites. When I read about the Voyager space probes still flying through space, now outside of the solar system, sending back increasingly faint beeps, it's makes me both amazed to think that the scientists were able to make something that could do that and kind of sad, because as irrational as it is to think of an inanimate object like this, I can't help but picture Wall-E, floating through the darkness.
