A couple of important clarifications: first, and most importantly, the more I look at it, the more I think it should be "Godwinning." Second, it's entirely possible that the gentleman at the center of the story is himself an idiot, so that headline might be inaccurate.
I'd long believed that the only people who name-drop Hitler on Twitter were either people who mistake invoking the Nazis for edgy humor and people who think that comparing [insert social outrage that they'll forget in about six hours here] with an almost entirely unrelated Nazi state policy will draw attention to the injustice of it all.
Now I realize how wrong I was, thanks to Malaysian MP Bung Moktar Radin, who congratulated the German men's soccer team by tweeting, in all caps, "WELL DONE...BRAVO...LONG LIVE HITLER..."
Bizarre ellipses and all-caps aside, that's a pretty damned inappropriate way to praise a soccer team, and even the German ambassador to Malaysia took issue with the tweet. The following snippet begins with a quotation from Bung, in which he explains that he doesn't understand what all the fuss is about:
"I don't know what's wrong with people sometimes. Hitler is part of history and the German team fought like how he did," he said.
Germany's ambassador to Malaysia, Holger Michael, has condemned the tweet.
He told The Malay Mail: "While we appreciate the admiration for the German football team, we strongly reject the unacceptable allusion to the fascist regime of Adolf Hitler."
[Editor's note: One notes the ambassador's sticking to the old rule—praise first, then criticize.]
