I’ve been thinking about legacies recently. When Brando died, most stories played “I coulda been a contender,” “STELLAAAAA!” and “I’m gonna make him an offer he can’t refuse,” and rightly so—they’re all iconic moments. As I’ve mentioned before, when Ned Beatty dies, they will play—or at least allude to—“Squeal like a pig,” although in any just universe they would start by playing “You have meddled with the primal forces of nature, Mr. Beale, and you will atone.”
I thought about this the other day when either the holy spirit or boredom possessed me to look up a clip on YouTube. My hunch is that when Phillip Baker Hall dies, they’re going to play the great Bookman scene from Seinfeld, but if news producers had any balls and/or disregard for their job security, they would play this bit from Boogie Nights.
It’s got everything. Nonsensical dialogue? Check. Love of fuckin’? Check. Guy in the background trying not to laugh so hard they have to stop filming? Check. Hall making a very unfortunate decision to adopt a hillbilly accent halfway through the scene? Check and mate. If they don’t play this in news reports of his demise, they should play it at his funeral. If they don’t do either, they should play it at my funeral, and let all three people who show up wonder what’s going on.
