At the risk of sounding like a charity-hating scrooge, I am so fucking tired of this ice bucket thing I could scream. It's become this year's Harlem Shake.
Of course I'm not against charitable giving. I do so, but I don't grandstand about it, and that's what I think bothers me the most. It's not about charity, but about the look-at-me culture that ubiquitous video has created. I wonder how many people have done the video and not given anyone anything? It has perverted the notion of supporting a charity.
My challenge to everyone would be to pick an honorable charity (like ALS) send them as big a check as you can, and then don't tell anyone about it.
Integrity is doing the right thing when no one is watching.
