I saw The Way Way Back last night, and it's one of the most delightful movies I've watched in a while. I laughed so many times, and when it was over, I just wanted to stay in my seat and watch it another time through. It made me feel happy in an elusive summers-of-childhood kind of way.
If you've ever wanted to see Steve Carell play a total asshole, and play him well (Michael Scott was ultimately too lovable to be a real asshole), this is your chance. Liam James is amazing as an awkward teenage boy—he does sullen and unhappy so well that when he finally starts smiling, it makes your heart lift.
But the real show-stealer is Sam Rockwell, who is so damn funny and adorable, I died like eight time during the movie, only to be miraculously resurrected each time by the power of his charms. He is, to steal a Jez-phrase, my new imaginary boyfriend.
Go see this movie. It will make you happy.
ETA: I cannot believe I neglected to mention that Allison Janney is goddamn hilarious in this movie. Were it not for my unsurpassable love of Drop Dead Gorgeous, I'd say this is one of my favorite Janney roles ever. She does enthusiastically drunk so very, very well.
