A friend of mine showed me this article, which is about a year old now. While arguably Facebook is going the way of the dodo, I liked the post because it was looking at the underlying motivations for public displays online, and I think it's generalizable beyond Facebook: to Twitter, to tumblr, to these forums even in some regards.

My one criticism of the post was that I felt the author was overestimating the degree to which instigating jealousy in others is a motivating factor in what people post by a considerable margin. Others said NO, making others feel jealous is a common motivation for those FB statuses, tweets, GT posts (kidding, kidding) and what have you.

Any thoughts? Does it seem to you that people get a charge out of making others jealous with their constant Facebookery etc?
